The article provides information on a report written by nuclear experts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which defined five alternatives for spent nuclear fuel management. The report states five options to geologic storage where an extended dry cask storage was regarded as the best choice. The report however states that the formal adoption of the plan is compelled by the U.S. government which is losing lawsuits brought against it for breaching its contracts with nuclear power plant operators to take title to spent fuel.
