ABSTRACT
The article cites the prevalence of sibling incest in India, based on the "India Today"-AC Nielsen ORG MARG sex survey in 2008. The key role played by taboo in maintaining secrecy, fear and shame about incest is noted. Among the means employed by perpetrators to ensure the silence of the child are bribery, coercion and lies. According to professionals, current statistics which note that one-third to half of girls and one-eighth to one-sixth of boys are sexually abused by the age of 18 are conservative.
