ABSTRACT
General information regarding universal health care in New Zealand is presented. Social and political debate surrounding public health care is examined with particular focus given to the concept of health care as a human right, the economic inefficiencies of universal health care, and the nation's history as a welfare state. The hybrid health care system which involves government funded hospital care and individual responsibility for general practitioner (GP) visits is also discussed.
