ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the application of the margin of appreciation doctrine by the European Court of Human Rights, which grants states the power to adopt measures to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights. It states that the margin of appreciation was applied in the case law on Islamic veil. The European Court held that it is necessary to impose freedom of religion restrictions in a democratic country where diverse religions coexist to reconcile different groups' interests.
