ABSTRACT
The article discusses the two phases of the history of global HIV/AIDS pandemic. The first phase of the pandemic, which starts from the earliest reported case of the disease in October 1982 in New York, characterized the disease as a public health catastrophe. The second phase of the pandemic covers the development and availability of highly effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 1996. An overview is given on global death rates and funding initiatives of public and private sectors from various countries.
