ABSTRACT
The article presents the author's reflections on his education and career as a historian, particularly in regard to studying the U.S. Civil War. The author's early fascination with the Southern States is mentioned. An overview of his studies at several institutions is given. His own personal observations noting the parallels between the 1860s and the 1960s in U.S. life are also included.
