People who deal with children receive a lot of advice about the importance of being consistent with discipline, of providing consequences consistently each and every time children misbehave. The consequences are, in effect, punishment. This paper will show that providing punishment consistently is not an effective strategy, neither from a behavioral perspective nor from a develop mental perspective. Teaching children about real life consequences rather than imposing additional consequences is more effective, both behaviorally and develop mentally. It promotes moral development and empowers children to manage their own behavior by anticipating and responding to real life consequences.
