ABSTRACT
The article discusses the stages of the development of a child, distinguish what a child needs to learn and the kind of books that will help them throughout the process. It mentions that parents prepare and influence their children for the world, for their experience in school and for their future success in literacy. Picture-book reading offers children with many of the skills essential for school, such as the structure of stories, vocabulary and sound structure. It says that the Self-Extending Reader or Fluent Reader is able to read for meaning and have very big core of high-frequency words.
