ABSTRACT
The article examines the religious aspects of conflicts and peace initiatives between minority Muslims and Buddhists in southern Thailand. The decision of the government to alter its assimilation campaign due to Malay nationalism in the 1940s is cited as the origin of the current religious tensions. The Buddhist monastic establishment is blamed for the pressures facing Thai Buddhism. The government is urged to form a joint committee of Buddhist and Muslim leaders to discuss misunderstandings.
