ABSTRACT
The article provides a working definition of stem cells and discusses the hierarchal potential of different cell population. A discussion on the niche requirements which impact the therapeutic potential of the stem cell is offered. Given as well is an explanation on the differences between totipotent stem cells, pluripotent stem cells, adult stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells. A perspective on the current state of stem cell research is also highlighted.
