Assessment and Characterization at Green Remediation of Crude oil contaminated soil

Centrosema pubescen Benth performance at soil metal clean - up was investigated. In a simulated study, young seedlings grown in bonny light crude oil contaminated soil, were capable of enhancing significant reduction of large amounts of heavy metal contaminants (i.e. Cd, Cu and Fe )in a relatively short time. Other nutrient elements (i.e. Mg and Na) were monitored. These plants were capable of extracting from the feeding soil solution and stocking in their roots amounts of cadmium and iron equivalent to 7 %, 2 % Cu and 4.5 % of their dry weight material respectively; 3.4 % Na and 1.5 % Mg of their dry weight material. The % metal uptake capacity of the root for different metals was found to be in the order of: Cd > Fe > Na > Cu > Mg and leaf Mg > Na > Fe > Cd = Cu. The highest amount adsorbed was Cd (root > leaf). With an average mass decreasing with increasing concentration of spill from 0.04 - 0.31 g in dry weight, Centro plant could extract 19.38 mg/kg of Cd and 330 mg/kg of Fe from the feeding solution in 12 weeks. However, translocation to the leaves was not effective for a possible harvest and destruction of the harvestable shoot thereafter. Clean -up overall potential improved statistically with biostimulation using poultry manure. Progressive decreases in infiltration were seen with application of amendment (poultry manure) and this observation suggests that soil pH and its effect on the electric charge of the amendment is the dominant factor that determines infiltration. There was also, increased nodulation with amendment hence increased microbial action.
