The article offers information on charter schools in the U.S. The schools are based from the models of the British Academy schools which are publicly funded but privately managed by non-profit and for-profit concerns. A background on the origin of charter schools is provided. The Centre for Research in Educational Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University in California published in June 2009 an evaluation of the impact on student achievement of charter schools.
