ABSTRACT
Throughout history, the oil industry has been constantly searching for improvements and optimizations for mitigation of operational problems and non-productive times during drilling operations, which are somehow related to wellbore instability problems and geomechanics in general. Underbalanced drilling or UBD has become the most interesting choice to solve different complications presented while conventional drilling and, at the same time, generate significant revenue for production increases, despite this technology implies high initial costs. However, not all of the wells are suitable to go through with such operations, therefore, it is necessary to bring off a good feasibility study. The present project describes how a field, belonging to the Llanos Orientales basin, shows some issues that concern to formation damage and other different problems, which leads to minimize production. These issues must be controlled or mitigated by using underbalanced drilling technics. The field is studied in detail, taking into account the severity of the operational problems, physical and petrophysical properties and wellbore stability to evaluate the technical feasibility to implement this technology in strategic zones previously selected to control the problem.
