ABSTRACT
This study suggests and considers the application of assembly line balancing heuristics to designing a product layout for automobile assembly to provide a platform for high utilization of labour and equipment, which is necessary for scheduled completion of motor manufacturing processes in product development projects. Secondary data was obtained from a record of routing list-operations in a motor manufacturing company. The line balancing method; incremental utilization heuristic was used to design the layout and in the determination of performance measures after the data analysis. The layout was subjected to a validity test, which indicated a utilization/balance efficiency of 96.88%. Motor assembly operations with very long task times in a workstation should be divided into smaller workstation based on the multiples of cycle time. This could imply increasing the numbers of workstations or employees necessary fast track assembly operations in a motor manufacturing company.
