ABSTRACT
The article reports on the history of Maori and Pakeha peace activists in New Zealand. Colonel George Hamilton-Browne lamented in his memoir that the military solution would have quickly sorted the Maori problem had it not been thwarted by "a gang." When soldiers invaded peaceful Maori villages, there wasn't an undiluted flood of patriotic tears.
