ABSTRACT
The article looks at gun ownership and gun control in the U.S., as of 2013. It cites recent fatal shootings, including the Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin allegedly by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman and the mass shootings in a Connecticut elementary school and a Colorado movie theater, all in 2012. The author presents a case for the view that such events are inevitable in the U.S. as long as a high number of guns are present and as long as Americans accept the idea of a largely unlimited right to own guns. Topics include mental illness and gun violence, individualism, and the political debate over gun control.
