ABSTRACT
The article discusses the final raid and political machinations of the pirate known as Blackbeard. It examines the August 23, 1718, raid on the French merchant ships "Rose Emelye" and the "Toison d'Or," Blackbeard's career in piracy, the popularity of pirates in popular culture in the early 21st century, and whether Blackbeard went by the name Edward Thatch or Edward Teach. It also discusses the mission launched by then-Virginia governor Alexander Spotswood to capture Blackbeard.
