ABSTRACT
The article focuses on piracy as a global problem and its impact on global commerce. The International Maritime Bureau and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) play an important role in monitoring maritime crimes. Nearly 500 piratical acts have been logged by the IMO since it started collecting details in the early 1980s. Most recently, the main trouble spot has been in the South China Sea, the Philippines' Luzon Island and China's Hainan Island.
