ABSTRACT
The article examines the benefits and challenges of offering access to collaborative learning tools such as blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. The early experience of several innovative instructional technology leaders in helping teachers use social media to boost collaboration among their students are described, including principal Eric Sheninger of the New Milford High School in New Jersey, who used Google Docs, Glogster and other social media; technology instructor Melissa Zier of K-8 Saint Francis Episcopal Day School in Texas, who used TodaysMeet to hold quick online class meetings; and Michigan's Greenhills School which built its own social media platform called Greenhouse. The district-wide use of Edmodo in Chesterfield County, Virginia, is also discussed. INSET: SOCIAL MEDIA SECURITY.
