ABSTRACT
Australia enacted an extraordinary number of anti-terror laws in the name of the 'war on terror' in the years after September 11. This lecture asks whether Australia needed new antiterror laws, and assesses the laws that were enacted. It also deals with recommendations made for reform, and the prospects that such changes might be realised. It reaches conclusions about Australia's new anti-terror laws, and, more broadly, what the enactment of these laws suggests about the Australian legal system, and the protection it offers for fundamental human rights.
