ABSTRACT
This article answers questions related to instant messaging (IM) in the business enterprise. One of the key benefits of IM is presence-based communication, which tells you when a person you're trying to contact is available and willing to engage in conversation. IM systems that offer file transfer features can spread viruses, Trojan horse code, network worms and other attacks. Anti-virus tools are beginning to provide protection against this mode of propagation. For example, Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2003 will scan files transferred over IM platforms and works with consumer IM platforms from AOL, Yahoo and MSN. The Internet Engineering Task Force is working on IM interoperability.
