ABSTRACT
The article looks at Brunei, providing an overview of political, economic, and foreign-relations developments during the year 2013. It provides figures on economic growth and inflation rates and discusses the country's effort to diversify its economy away from reliance on the petroleum industry. It discusses the pace of democratic reform under Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. The country's role as 2013 chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is also discussed.
