2 The Portugal Stock Index fell 4.2% on fears Espirito Santo Int'l and its Banco Espirito Santo are in deep trouble. Trading in the bank and an ESI subsidiary was halted after the bank's shares fell 17%. Bank stocks throughout Europe led a sell-off, although the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares firmed down 1%.
