ABSTRACT
Chapter 12 of the book "Philosophical Perspectives on the "War on Terrorism"" is presented. It focuses on Jessica Lynch, a U.S. Army private who was missing in Iraq for many days before she was rescued, and the attendant media coverage of her rescue. There were varied versions of her story in media reports and the author analyzes the reason for such interest by the public. She notes that Lynch was a powerful symbol of different things to different people but she actively tried to ensure that the media did not use her image to reinforce racism.
