ABSTRACT
The exploration of the American wilderness in quest of furs began during the 17th century. The victory of the British in the French and Indian War in 1763 forced France to withdraw all territorial claims on the continent. In the same year Pontiac, chief of the Ottawas, united all Native American tribes to drive settlers out of the region. The rebellion failed, allowing British fur traders and trappers to expand the fur trade.
