ABSTRACT
The article chronicles the establishment of the Post of El Paso, Texas on January 11, 1854. It was built to protect settlers from the Indians. A few months later it got a new name, Fort Bliss. In its long and colorful history, Fort Bliss has guarded the border against Mexican invaders and hostile Indians; has served the Confederacy and the Union; has trained the U.S. Cavalry; provided men to chase Geronimo and Pancho Villa; and prepared men for two World Wars.
