The article focuses on the fire and explosion that occurred in Texas City, Texas on April 16, 1947. A thin wisp of smoke rose near the Monsanto Chemical Company plant. The word soon spread that it was not the plant that was on fire, but a ship called the Grandcamp docked at the nearby wharf. Soon the fire was blazing and the smoke that rose into the April sky was more orange than black or gray. As one plant after another caught fire, there were more explosions, and at 1:15 the next morning the ship the High Flyer, loaded with 900 tons of ammonium nitrate, blew up. The disaster remains the worst fire and explosion in the nation's history.
