ABSTRACT
The article features artist Gene Autry who was born on September 29, 1907, in the little Texas town of Tioga. To keep himself busy on the night shift as a telegraph operator, he played the guitar and sang. He landed a job on Tulsa station KVOO. A few years later he cut a record of a song he had written called That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine. It sold five million copies. That led to more radio broadcasts on network hook-ups, and then a role in a Western movie. The Republic Studios signed him to a contract to make the first singing Western, Tumbling Tumble Weeds.
