ABSTRACT
The nuclear power industry is rousing from its long slumber and starting the long, tedious and expensive process of getting a new nuclear powerplant under construction by 2010. The world has changed dramatically since that industry fell into its deep sleep after the nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island in the U.S. in 1979 and Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986. Research has continued quietly on improving reactors and other technology but without a fundamental change in the nuclear industry's approach to the public, one can look forward to endless replays of the verbal combat that halted the industry. Construction of any new plant also depends on ending the equally interminable battle over the spent nuclear-fuel repository under construction at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
