ABSTRACT
The author reflects on efforts to generate alternative electric power by the small community of Freiamt, Germany and several villages in Denmark. The villages installed roof-mounted photovoltaic systems as well as wind generators to make their small regions self-sufficient in terms of energy production. These communities then sell any excess power generated back to the national grid. The implications these renewable energy programs have on the traditional energy business is also addressed.
