ABSTRACT
This article presents an interview with the former U.S. envoy to Afghanistan and current ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad. The Afghanistan Constitution was approved by 78% of the popular vote, but was closer on the electoral vote. Iraq needed a charismatic leader like Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan, but neglected to find one. The U.S. has been trying to separate the extremist Sunnis in Iraq from the rest of the Sunnis. Khalilzad believes that in spite of what people think about the circumstances that brought the U.S. into Iraq, now that we are there, we must succeed for the sake of Iraq and the region.
