ABSTRACT
An interview with Esperanza Spalding, jazz bassist, is presented. Asked how she gets her student to their next level in playing, she says she organizes how they are going to practice to give them focus on their strengths and what they need to refine. On how students can make musical connections with other players, she advises knowing the fundamentals of rhythmic accuracy and the dexterity of the instrument. She explains that as an artist she has a responsibility to let people experience something that is uplifting.
