ABSTRACT
An interview with jazz bassist and composer Esperanza Spalding is presented. She cites the television program "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" wherein Yo-Yo Ma was guest as her reason for studying music. She says that self-study at an early stage offers a degree of self-sufficiency. She mentions that when she was 16 she had received a scholarship in music to go to Portland State University.
