ABSTRACT
In the article, the author discusses the dehumanizing of the Afghan people in the western media's coverage of the U.S.'s war in Afghanistan. The author uses the media coverage of the shooting down of a U.S. helicopter on August 6, 2011 to illustrate his point. He notes that while the media reported on the death of a U.S. dog, they made no mention of Afghan civilians’ or Taliban fighters’ deaths. The author discusses the “5 o’clock follies” from the Vietnam War in which reporters reported the deaths of both the Vietnamese and the Americans.
