ABSTRACT
Information on the metaphorical use of the word "apathy," in several literary works, is presented. Authors use the word to describe the impassivity of peoples towards the sufferings of others. Author Alice Adams states that she has to run empty after an earthquake in 1990 in San Francisco, California, forced the plane to return to its departure point.
