ABSTRACT
The article presents information on a report published by the World Health Organization, which reveals that the rate of HIV diagnosis in Great Britain has doubled since 2000. It suggests that increased testing may have contributed to the rise in recorded infections from 3,499 in 2000 to 7,258 in 2004. Approximately 80 percent of these infections were contracted outside Great Britain in high-prevalence countries, with most originating in sub-Saharan Africa. The increase in HIV has affected women in particular with the prevalence of previously undiagnosed HIV infections among women presenting to GUM clinics outside London, England reaching 11 percent in 2003.
